GBHS Girl's Basketball Raises $3000 For Haiti Earthquake Relief
The Granite Bay High School Girls Basketball Team has been off to a strong start in league play this season, with a 3-0 record in the ultra-competitive SFL. But success on the floor is just one aspect of this squad’s season focus.
“I think when you have the opportunity to be a voice in a teenagers life, in the role of coach, it is important to use that platform not only for athletic development, but personal growth as well,” first year Varsity Coach Melissa Triebwasser has said. “We try and incorporate personal growth into basketball growth as much as possible in practice and games.” With that in mind, the girl’s basketball program will be hosting a ‘Hoops for Haiti’ fundraising night on January 29th for their home contest against league rival Oakmont.
Triebwasser was approached by Junior Laura Preston, who was touched by the devestation she witnessed in light of the 7.0 magnitude earthquake to strike the small island, with the suggestion that they donate the snack bar profits from a game to a Haitian Charity. With the support of the coach and the administration at Granite Bay, a simple gesture is becoming an event that the school hopes will raise money and awareness for the Haitian crisis. They will be collecting funds through snack bar receipts, commemorative t-shirt sales, a raffle, a donation jar, and more. There are also local businesses sponsoring made shots by the Grizzlies, at $5 for every two point bucket and $10 for every three point shot made Friday evening.
“We are so fortunate here, that it’s easy to over look what goes on in the rest of the world sometimes. But seeing the images on TV of what has happened in Haiti, I wanted to try and do something to help. The administration has been really supportive, and we hope this will be a successful night of fund raising for a very worthy cause,” Preston said.
The Grizzlies are inviting the local community to come out and support two solid programs that both boast double digit wins on the season, and give what they can to help the earthquake victims. With a recent aftershock of over 6.0 magnitude, the work in that country has truly only just begun. Tip off for the Varsity contest will be at 7:30.
